The fight with the corpse soldiers was over by the time that Leo dragged himself up one of the ladders and through the trapdoor. His companions were sitting exhausted in whatever chairs they had been able to find, surrounded by piles of cadavers.

Grigor had reverted to his human form; wrapped in his tattered robes, he was chatting with Ballantine, while Flashman was drinking a glass of champagne and trying to flirt with Anasatasiya, who seemed rather uninterested. As Leo approached, they all leapt to their feet, gathering around him and smiling in relief.

“Leo, old chap, am I glad to see you!” Harry said. “I was getting a bit worried there for a moment.”

Leo felt a light touch on his arm and looked down into the viridian eyes of the Countess.

“That was very brave, leaping on Koschei like that.” Her smile was enough to take away some of the sting of his cuts and bruises.

“Yes, well done, laddie!” Leo staggered as Ballantine clapped him on the shoulder. “Koschei wasn’t expecting that now, was he?”

“But, where is Koschei?” Grigor asked, worry evident in his deep voice. “I had heard that he could not be killed.”

“Koschei is shortly going to find out what happens when you get too close to one hundred pounds of explosive. It may not kill him, but it will be a while before he bothers us again.” He looked around at his companions. “But, I’d suggest we get as far away as we can get in about…” he looked at his watch, “…three minutes.”

“Sounds like a good plan, Leo.” Harry gestured extravagantly towards the front of the hotel. “After you, Your Illustriousness.”

As they walked away, as casually as if the were going for a stroll rather than trying to avoid being blown up, Leo could make out snatches of conversation.

“..England is lovely this time of year...”

“...oh, I know all the right people...”

“...with shooting like that, you must come hunting with me...”

Leo swore and hurried after them. He had a feeling that his biggest challenge was still ahead of him.
